  • Tesla says Optimus production began on high-volume lines in Fremont, per its Q3 2026 update of 21 October.
  • No production rate, unit count, price or model version was published.
  • Musk said deliveries to companies outside Tesla are expected at the end of 2027.
  • Musk said reaching 20,000 units a week would take about a year.
  • Tesla's Q3 net income fell 43% to USD 787 million.

Tesla says production of its Optimus humanoid robot has started on what it calls high-volume lines at its Fremont factory in California. The statement came in the company's third-quarter 2026 update, published on 21 October, which describes the units as "the first production-quality bots that we have manufactured". Tesla gave no production rate, unit count, price or model version. On the earnings call Elon Musk called it early production and said deliveries to companies outside Tesla are expected at the end of 2027.

Why it matters

This is the first time Tesla has said Optimus is being built on a production line rather than in a pilot setting, so buyers should separate what was stated from what was not.

What is stated: production has begun in Fremont, on space that previously built the Model S and Model X, according to Tesla North's reading of the deck. Tesla says it has "proven that the current manufacturing process for Optimus is suitable for a commercial product". The deck's installed capacity table lists California as "Early Ramp" and a dedicated Texas facility as "Construction", with no capacity figures for either.

What is not stated: how many robots have been built, how many a week, which version, or what a unit costs. Asked about cost on the call, Tesla said it was too early to say it had reached its target, according to call notes published by Shacknews. No price has been published. The same notes record Musk saying it would take about a year to reach 20,000 units a week, and that initial customers will be industrial.

Timing matters for anyone planning a pilot. Musk said the ramp would be "somewhat bumpy" and that he expects the remaining design and reliability issues to be solved "around the end of next year", as quoted by Tech Insider. He also said integration of Tesla's AI5 chip into Optimus is planned for about April 2027. For a buyer, that points to a robot whose hardware and computer are still changing through 2027.

The financial context is relevant too. Tesla reported net income of USD 787 million for the quarter, down 43% from USD 1.37 billion a year earlier, and TechCrunch notes that spending on AI and Optimus weighed on profit.

Proven: a production line exists and is producing units Tesla calls production quality. Demonstrated: nothing new was shown publicly with the update. Claimed: the 20,000 a week ramp and the end of 2027 delivery date.

What "mass production" numbers actually mean

Humanoid makers use the words "production" and "mass production" for very different things, and the numbers behind them come in three types. A rate is how many units a line can make in a period, such as a week. A cumulative total is how many have been built since the start. A delivered figure is how many have reached paying customers, outside the maker's own sites.

These can differ by a wide margin. A line can be installed for a rate of thousands a week while running at a fraction of that during the ramp. Units can be built and then used inside the maker's own factories or for collecting training data, which counts as cumulative output but not as deliveries. Tesla North reports that early Fremont builds went to Tesla's own data collection work.

A concrete example: a supplier that says it has "started mass production" and has a capacity of 100,000 units a year may have built 200 units and delivered none. All three statements can be true at once. When a vendor gives you a production figure, ask which of the three it is, over what period, and how many units are in customers' hands. Only the delivered number tells you about lead times and the vendor's ability to support a fleet. Today Tesla has given none of the three for Optimus.

Questions to ask the vendor

  • Which Optimus version is coming off the Fremont line, and will robots built now be upgraded when the AI5 computer is introduced?
  • How many units have been built to date, and how many are working in Tesla's own factories on productive tasks rather than data collection?
  • For the first outside customers at the end of 2027, what tasks, uptime and support terms will Tesla commit to in a contract?
  • Will Tesla sell the robot outright, lease it, or offer it as a service, and when will an indicative price be published?
