Robot Brief

ANYmal is a rugged, autonomous quadrupedal robot developed by ANYbotics (originating from ETH Zurich) for industrial inspection and complex environment navigation. Designed to increase safety and efficiency, it performs autonomous inspections in multi-story, confined, and hazardous industrial facilities. The robot features a compact, weatherproof (IP67) body with 12 electric actuators allowing dynamic walking, climbing stairs, and maneuvering narrow spaces.

Use Cases

  • Autonomous Inspection: Conducts mission-critical inspections in complex industrial environments, reducing human risk.
  • Terrain Navigation: Walks, trots, climbs stairs (up to 250mm rise), and maneuvers in narrow or slippery spaces.
  • Data Collection: Uses high-resolution sensors (LiDAR, cameras, thermal, gas sensors) to detect leaks, hotspots, and anomalies.
  • Real-Time Mapping & Localization: Employs AI and sensor fusion for centimeter-accurate positioning and obstacle avoidance.
  • Automatic Docking & Charging: Returns autonomously to docking stations for recharging, enabling extended missions.

Industries

  • Oil & Gas: Inspects pipelines, refineries, and gas plants for leaks and safety compliance.
  • Power & Utilities: Monitors substations and power plants.
  • Manufacturing: Performs safety and maintenance inspections.
  • Chemical Plants: Operates in hazardous, explosive environments (Ex-certified models available).
  • Research & Development: Platform for robotics and AI mobility research.

Intro

ANYmal is a compact (80×60×70 cm standing), 30 kg quadruped robot with 12 electric series elastic actuators enabling full 360° joint rotation. It is IP67 rated for dust and water resistance, allowing operation in harsh environments including rain, snow, and dust. Equipped with LiDAR, multiple cameras, thermal imaging, and gas sensors, it autonomously navigates complex facilities, climbs stairs, and avoids obstacles. Its modular payload capacity supports up to 10 kg of additional sensors or tools.

Connectivity

  • Built-in Wi-Fi and 4G/LTE for remote operation and data transmission.
  • API access for integration with customer systems.
  • Supports over-the-air software updates.

Capabilities

  • Dynamic Locomotion: Walking and trotting gaits with precise foot placement for stability on uneven terrain.
  • Stair Climbing: Can climb industrial stairs up to 250 mm rise and descend safely.
  • Obstacle Avoidance: AI-based perception and planning enable safe navigation in dynamic environments.
  • Environmental Sensing: Detects gas leaks, thermal anomalies, and captures high-resolution visual data.
  • Autonomous Operation: Includes automatic docking and charging for extended missions.
