Robot Brief

The BDX Droids (short for Bipedal Dynamic Experiment Droids) are autonomous, expressive robotic characters created by Disney Imagineering’s Project Kiwi team for Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge experiences at Disney parks. Designed to roam freely in themed environments, they exhibit fluid, lifelike movements, personality-driven behaviors, and real-time interaction choreography that enhance immersive storytelling. These duckling-like bipedal robots navigate terrain, perform expressive gestures, and engage guests with sight, sound, and motion as part of park entertainment.

Use Cases

  • Interactive Theme Park Character:
Roams around and interacts with guests in Disneylands' Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge.
  • Expressive Performance Robot:
Shows emotion and personality via head movement, gait, and behavior animations.
  • Immersive Entertainment:
Enhances guest experience within a narrative environment

Industries

  • Entertainment and Theme Parks:
Used as roaming characters for immersive storytelling.
  • Animatronics Research & Development:
Combines robotics with character design and reinforcement learning

Intro

The BDX Droids are stylized, compact, bipedal robots developed by Disney Imagineering to bring Star Wars world characters to life. Visually inspired by series such as Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, each unit has an expressive head, antennae, and articulated limbs that enable walking and gestural expressions. They were engineered to handle uneven terrain. Their development involved reinforcement learning and extensive simulation to produce lifelike gait and balance, and they blend robot motion with character-specific animations supplied by creative teams.

Connectivity

Capabilities

  • Bipedal Locomotion:
Walking with balance and “duckling-like” gait.
  • Expressive Animations:
Head nods, gestures, and movement sequences tied to storytelling.
  • Mixed Autonomous & Operator-Assisted Control:
Some autonomy with operator oversight for guest interactions.
