Robot Brief

Keyper is an advanced autonomous quadrupedal robot designed by Keybotic primarily for industrial inspection in high-risk, challenging environments. It balances lightweight design (43 kg) with robust hardware, enabling it to navigate complex industrial facilities including multi-story plants. The robot features all-electric actuation, with a compact body housing batteries, motors, electronics, and sensors while minimizing leg inertia for swift, precise leg movement. Keyper combines mobility with advanced perception capabilities—such as stereo cameras, 3D mapping, and AI-driven navigation—which allow it to climb stairs and slopes, crawl through confined spaces, and maintain stability on uneven or gravel terrain. Developed using an evolutionary engineering approach, it incorporates cutting-edge CPUs and sensor payload integration for industrial monitoring and safety enhancement.

Use Cases

  • Autonomous Industrial Inspection: Performs routine and on-demand inspections in complex industrial settings with minimal human intervention.
  • Advanced Mobility: Capable of climbing stairs, negotiating slopes, navigating confined spaces, and balancing on varied surfaces including gravel.
  • Multi-Sensor Perception: Integrates stereo vision, RGB cameras, thermal imaging, LiDAR, microphones, and spotlighting for comprehensive environmental awareness.
  • Inspection & Monitoring: Detects anomalies such as thermal irregularities, gas or steam leaks, and monitors compliance like safety helmet use.
  • User-Friendly Operation: Designed with click-to-start simplicity for operators without prior technical experience.
  • Real-Time Alerts & AI: Provides active monitoring with AI-based decision making, including anomaly detection, task planning, and route optimization.

Industries

  • Chemical Plants: Safe inspection in corrosive, explosive, or toxic environments.
  • Oil & Gas: Monitoring pipelines, tanks, and equipment for leaks, corrosion, and damage.
  • Energy & Utilities: Inspecting power plants and related infrastructure with minimal downtime.
  • Manufacturing & Heavy Industry: Routine facility inspection and maintenance support.
  • Safety Compliance: Monitoring workers and identifying safety hazards.
  • (Suggested) Security Patrols: Potential for expanded security applications due to autonomous navigation and sensor suite.

Intro

Keyper weighs 43 kg with a compact geometric footprint (~60 cm length, 95 cm width) and a rugged, impact-resistant structure. Its four legs house only actuators for reduced inertia, while its central body carries all sensing, processing, communication, and energy storage components powered by lithium-ion batteries. Equipped with five cameras (front top/bottom, sides, back), Keyper has stereo vision with up to 90 fps and HD resolution. It supports 3D mapping via multi-channel LiDAR, thermal and zoom cameras, microphones, and embedded speakers. Dual Intel 12th-gen CPUs handle deterministic locomotion controls, perception, and asynchronous planning tasks. It features multiple plug-and-play payload connectors for sensor customization. The robot operates autonomously on routine or event-driven inspection rounds to extend facility monitoring, reduce human risk, and maximize uptime.

Connectivity

  • Wireless communications supporting remote teleoperation and monitoring.
  • Ethernet ports and multiple payload connectors (power and data) for sensor expansions.
  • Dedicated CPU cores managing locomotion/perception and higher-level tasks respectively.

Capabilities

  • Agile Locomotion: Efficient walking at speeds up to 2 m/s, though typically limited to ~1 m/s in industrial settings for safety.
  • Stair & Slope Handling: Can ascend and descend stairs and slopes reliably.
  • Confined Space Crawling: Small enough and stable for tight areas where other vehicles cannot go.
  • Comprehensive Sensing: RGB, depth, thermal, gas detection, and acoustic sensors provide rich contextual awareness.
  • AI-Driven Autonomy: Real-time decision making for route optimization, hazard detection, and inspection reporting.
  • Integration Ready: Designed to run customer integration code within safe computing capacity, without needing external companion computers.
