Intro

The University of Tehran is the oldest and largest university in Iran, officially inaugurated in 1934. Its origins trace back to the ancient Jondi Shapur University dating over 2,000 years, and it evolved through Dar-ol-Fonoon College, established in 1851 as Iran’s first modern higher education institution. The university was founded through a government initiative led by Abdolhossein Teymourtash and Isa Sedigh, with architectural planning by French and European architects.

The university’s campus was established on the Jalaliyeh Garden compound in Tehran, designed with influences from early 20th-century modernist architecture. It initially merged several existing schools, including medicine, agriculture, law, political sciences, and arts, creating a comprehensive academic institution. The university admitted women for the first time in 1937.

Today, the University of Tehran encompasses 25 faculties, 9 campuses, and 11 research centers, offering a wide range of academic programs and research activities. It is recognized as a symbol of higher education in Iran and plays a central role in the country’s scientific, cultural, and social development.
